In a world sharply divided by differing views of economic, cultural, environmental, and political realities, we need better ways to inquire how issues of values and vision, for better or for worse, are driving the behavior of practitioners in all professions. What is the role of institutions - educating management, legal, medical, science, arts, humanities, and religious professionals - to help students think about and form their values and vision to create a better, more just world?
We can learn a lot by reclaiming and updating the spiritual insights and practices of the Medieval monasteries and universities and practicing them today.
And unlikely as it may seem, American Pragmatism created by the Classical American Pragmatists - including Oliver Wendell Homes, Jr - may be one such a practice. An example to discuss is the landmark book by former Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer: Reading the Constitution: Why I Chose Pragmatism NOT Textualism.
