    National Law Day of Action:
Standing for the Rule of Law

    Thursday, May 1, 2025
    Federal Plaza
    219 S Dearborn St, Chicago, IL 60604

The principles of judicial independence and the independence of the legal profession are facing unprecedented challenges across the country. Attacks on judges for their rulings and attempts to intimidate or punish lawyers for representing and advocating for their clients violate the rule of law, a historical cornerstone of our democracy.

Standing for the rule of law is not a political or partisan issue, but rather a fundamental issue of respecting the rule of law. We encourage fellow members of the legal profession and the general public to honor and defend the Constitution and the rule of law and support the essential role of the legal profession in our society. Join the Chicago Bar Association along with other Chicagoland Bar Associations on May 1st for an oath reaffirmation ceremony to support the rule of law and judicial independence.

The reaffirmation of oath will be administered by Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis.

Register now to let us know you're coming and receive updates on the program.

Illinois adoption of certain Model Rules of Professional Conduct of the ABA evolved into Rule 1.8 (J) and Rules 8.4(j) of the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct for lawyers. The new Illinois Judicial Code of Ethics adopted a similar provision. This CLG seminar will address the evolution of these rules including the 2024 amendments by the Supreme Court and the inclusion of sexual harassment as qualifying for the professional responsibility credits under Rule 794(d)(1) enacted February 1, 2024.

    Speaker:

    Mary Ambrose-Gerak

Mary C. Ambrose-Gerak, began her career at Kutak, Rock & Campbell - the firm that wrote the original ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Mary worked at large law firms like Katten, Muchin & Zavis and Pedersen & Houpt, and has held in-house roles at companies including Kraft, Motorola, and Baxter. She is a former U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) prosecutor with extensive experience in employment law. She has served as a trainer for major U.S. corporations in industries such as automotive, food, and pharmaceuticals, as well as investigated Cook County on Shakman hiring violations. She has also trained for organizations like SHRM, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, and the DuPage and Lake County Bar Associations, and the NWSBA, and has written Notre Dame Alumni Magazine. An adjunct faculty member at Notre Dame, Loyola, and DePaul law schools, she is also an employment arbitrator for the AAA and an author of a journal article on post-pandemic employment issues. Mary played a key role in drafting Illinois Supreme Court Rule 1.8(J) on attorney sexual misconduct.

    CATHOLIC LAWYERS GUILD'S
    WORKERS FORUM II

Obstacles and Opportunities for Labor Union Organizing and Advancement of Worker Rights Today

    Thursday, June 12, 2025

    11:00 am - 2:00 pm CT

The freedom to join trade unions and the effective action of unions . . . are meant to deliver work from the mere condition of 'a commodity' and to guarantee its dignity.
    St. John Paul II

The Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago has undertaken an initiative to highlight the long-standing Catholic teaching supporting the rights of workers. Catholic teaching supports unions as essential to advancing humane and just conditions for workers and to permit their participation in the workplace. We are witnessing regular assaults on worker rights due to numerous executive Orders of the Trump Administration.

The Catholic Lawyers Guild is hosting a Forum to educate and enlighten attorneys, as well as the larger community, about the relevance of Catholic social teaching for these developments and the legal and practical implications for the advancement of the worker rights in our country today.

The Forum will take place on June 12, 2025 from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm. It will be held at the Carpenters Council Hall located at 12 East Erie in Chicago. Lunch will be provided.

KEYNOTE: The meaning of Rerum Novarum for worker rights and its potential for the future of labor organizing

Speaker: Don Villar, Secretary/Treasurer, Chicago Federation of Labor

SESSION I: LEGAL CHALLENGES to the National Labor Relations Act and the NLRB

The constitutional challenge to the NLRA and the Supreme Court's overruling  of Chevron – What is the likely impact on workers' rights to organize and the enforcement of those rights?

Speaker(s): Professor Anne Lofaso, University of Cincinnati Law School

SESSION II: TODAY’S UNION ORGANIZING – How Barista workers win unionization in the face of Starbuck’s opposition

Presentation by organizers of recent unionization efforts

Speaker(s): Starbucks Workers United in Chicago - specific speakers to be announced
